In *Kids*, Clark cast New York City "street" kids with no previous acting experience, notably Leo Fitzpatrick (Telly) and Justin Pierce (Casper).[[10]](#cite_note-Taylor-10)[[11]](#cite_note-FOOTNOTEHynes2015[httpsarchivetoday20240708181104httpswwwrollingstonecomfeaturekids-the-oral-history-of-the-most-controversial-film-of-the-nineties-105069_pp._1-6]-11) Clark originally decided he wanted to cast Fitzpatrick in a film after watching him skateboard in New York, and cursing when he could not land certain tricks.[[12]](#cite_note-12) Korine had met Chloë Sevigny in New York before production began on *Kids*, and initially cast her in a small role as one of the girls in the swimming pool.[[13]](#cite_note-13) She was given the leading role of Jennie after [Mia Kirshner](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mia_Kirshner "Mia Kirshner"), the original actress cast, was deemed not the right fit to work with first-time actors.[[14]](#cite_note-FOOTNOTEHynes2015[httpsarchivetoday20240303055423httpswwwrollingstonecomfeaturekids-the-oral-history-of-the-most-controversial-film-of-the-nineties-1050696_p._6]-14)[[15]](#cite_note-IndieWire-15)[[9]](#cite_note-Bowen-9) Clark had stated he was alright with the experienced Kirshner playing Jennie, as Jennie was not a real "character." After being dismissed from the film, Kirshner's lawyer told co-producer Lauren Zalaznick that [Mike Ovitz](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Ovitz "Michael Ovitz") would call her in protest of Kirshner's firing, who ultimately never did.[[16]](#cite_note-16) Sevigny and Korine went on to make *[Gummo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gummo "Gummo")* (1997) and *[Julien Donkey-Boy](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julien_Donkey-Boy "Julien Donkey-Boy")* (1999) together.
