Former professional basketball player Brian Demarco Williams and his group “Sports by the Sea” have teamed up with the Town of Kure Beach to run a Flag Football League for athletes between 5-14 years old. “As an athlete, I’m very aware of both the benefits and dangers of sports,” said Williams. “Sports is a great avenue to gain confidence, accomplishment, a fit lifestyle, amongst other vital characteristics that make up a quality person.”. Kure Beach will hold a youth flag football league later this month. Kure Beach will hold a youth flag football league later this month. The Kure Beach Flag Football League is open to both boys and girls and provides a non-contact environment to help kids learn and develop traits that can help benefit them in the years ahead. “While there may be no way to completely take the physicality out of a sport which is founded in contact, the Kure Beach League dramatically minimizes the chance of injury by implementing no running (only passing) zones in situations where extreme collisions would be expected,” Williams said. “In addition, each of the positions are skilled positions (quarterback, wide receiver, running back, etc.), therefore the need for blocking and tackling is eliminated.”. Williams has put on hundreds of clinics over the last four years since retiring from professional basketball in 2012. During a 10-year pro career, he played in Europe, China and briefly in the NBA. The cost to participate is $60 per person, or $40 for siblings.
